As reported recently in The Guardian, The House of Lords is suggesting that maths should be compulsory at A Level.
A report published this month into the quality of STEM subjects in our schools – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – also recommends that we encourage more students to study these subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Worryingly, many UK universities are suggesting that of the undergraduates who are enrolling on these degrees, many are coming into their programmes unprepared, even those who have studied – and have excelled in — maths at A Level.
It’s almost shocking to hear how UK University Vice Chancellors acknowledge a major skills deficit in maths:
“When you’ve got the vice chancellor of Cambridge saying that we get nothing but A* students coming in and yet we have to do remedial mathematics for them to engage with engineering and physics, there is something seriously wrong with the system.”
At Wifi Tutors, we recognise the importance of maths as a bedrock for almost any career, and it comes as a disappointment to us, though no great surprise, to read that our schools are not giving our students an adequate foundation in the subject.
If you’re a parent and your child needs extra tuition in maths, please don’t hesitate to contact us today for a free demo. With the holidays well and truly upon us, though with summer sunshine in short supply, now might be a good time to put in a few extra hours’ work for those exams coming up next year.
