Doing wells in exams is what your hard work is all about. For some, the amount of work that they have put in in the run up to the exams will not pay off and they will underperform. For others, exams will go great and they will perform beyond their initial expectations. There may be a number of uncontrollable factors which determine why a student underperforms, but you can always minimise your chances of ‘having a bad day at the office’ by preparing as best you can and using your study time as effectively as possible.
You may only get one chance to shine, and you owe it to yourself to make sure that you give yourself the best possible chance to succeed.
There’s nothing worse than wading through pages of notes before exams and trying to memorise everything. As a learning method, this is quite passive and may not ensure that you’re able to assimilate a great deal of complex information. One alternative may be to draw a series of mindmaps on particular topics, themes and people, a format which will help you naturally segment patterns of information in your mind and establish links between areas of learning.
Coming up to the exams, drawing up a set of postcards can also be a useful technique. Put a couple of key points in brightly coloured writing on each postcard to give you a last minute refresh before you go into the exam hall. Learn material in manageable bite sized chunks rather than trying to take in vast pages of notes and always study somewhere quiet, well lit and tidy.
We do hope that you’ve found some of these pointers useful and we’ll be providing some more useful tips in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, happy studying!
